prospective fathers should be looking after their weight.

It never seems to stop! Researchers have proven that being obese or overweight has yet another downside in that it may lead to men producing low birth weight babies. We have already published research at Ukmedix News which shows that overweight women are also likely to produce children with low birth weights as well as other health complications but this new research shows that prospective fathers should also be looking after their weight.

obese fathers more likely to have underweight babies

The research which was done by a group of scientists at the University of Auckland was done by examining medical data on over 2,000 couples who participated in the Screening for Pregnancy Endpoints (SCOPE) study. The scientists said that there was a definite correlation between obese fathers and 'Small for Gestational Age' (SGA) babies that was independent of maternal influences.

Professor Lesley McCowan, the author of the study and Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Auckland said that this research seemed also to support the theory that fathers of SGA babies were often themselves small at birth and that small birth size could to a certain extent actually be inherited from your father. The research was published in the medical journal Obesity.

Ukmedix News has also published research which shows that obese men are less fertile and that their sperm counts are lower and lack motility. It is also worth being aware that obesity is one of the most significant causes of erectile dysfunction.  Obese men should not try and convince themselves that their weight is not an issue because it could impact on their lives in many different ways. Obese fathers are also likely to pass on their bad eating habits and thus their obesity to their children.

Obesity also drastically increases the chances of you suffering from diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, cancer and aggravates many other health conditions. If you are overweight you need to deal with it sooner rather than later and don't wait till it's too late!

This is strangely interesting because I forever thought that obese parents gave birth to overweight babies!
