There appears to be a clear correlation between the amount of food that a country throws away and the size of its obesity problem. This has been highlighted by data which shows that the American people throw away around 40 percent of all food that is produced in America. This shocking statistic is up 50 percent from 1974 and it is estimated that the average person in America throws away 1,400 calories of food daily which in itself is enough to feed a person.

The statistics which were compiled in a report commissioned by the United States Department of Agriculture also showed that the number of people in America whose eating habits were affected by a shortage of money has risen to 6.7 million, up two million from two years ago.
The researchers led by Professor Kevin Hall from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases came to their conclusion by simply working out the supply of food in the United States compared to the average amount of food eaten by individuals. They also looked at average BMI’s and metabolisms to come up with their results.
The United Kingdom needs to learn lessons from this terrible obesity epidemic happening in America and which is beginning closer to home. The British government is able to enact legislation to prevent the heavy marketing and promotion of unhealthy food and also to support healthy eating initiatives in schools all over the country.
The “Go Large” culture of fast food restaurants has to be shown to be extremely damaging to health and the UK government should come up with advertisements to warn people of the dangers of overeating.
In the same way that smoking is vilified in advertisements, unhealthy food should also be given the same sort of treatment and fast food restaurants which encourage overeating should be named and shamed.
What are you waiting for Gordon Brown?!

I am American and I think it is unfair to single out the USA. Have a look at the Jeremy Kyle programme it is scarey to see that 80% of the young appearing on the show are not overweight but obese. Wake up UK it is not coming here, it already exists!!!
