The New York City Health Department is flexing its muscles yet again to keep New Yorkers from becoming unhealthy and this time it is not about quitting smoking but a hard hitting campaign to prevent you from becoming overweight or obese.

New billboard advertisements which will be covering the New York subway show unpleasant images of sugary fizzy drinks transforming into disgusting yellow blobs of human fat lined with blood vessels. The idea is to show the clear correlation between consuming drinks that have high sugar contents and excess fat on your body.
The New York Health Department officials were clear about the fact that the advertisement was disgusting and Associate Commissioner Mr. Geoff Cowley said that from their experience sending a positive health message was less effective than scaring people with shocking images. He went on to say that getting in “people's faces a bit… does get people's attention”.
It is hoped that this campaign will have a positive effect in reducing the amount of calories consumed by New Yorkers and that they will go for water instead of bottled teas, sweet fizzy drinks and all the other drinks with too much sugar in them. It is important to be careful because some drinks which sound harmless such as iced tea and fruit juices actually have huge amounts of sugar added to them.
The New York Health Department said that a simple 20oz bottle of soda could contain as much as 16 teaspoons of sugar and that even sports drinks had almost 8 teaspoons of sugar in them. The best thing to do is to drink water.
At Ukmedix News we have often harped on about the fact that by making small changes to your eating habits you can make a big difference to your weight over time. Just by cutting out sugary drinks from your diet might be all that you need to keep slim.
