about 80% of individuals in the United Kingdom are eating too much saturated fat

New research announced by the British government shows that the amount of saturated fat eaten by people in north of the country is twice as much as that eaten by people who live in the south. Saturated fat is known to be dangerous to health and is far more unhealthy then eating unsaturated fats. A big intake of saturated fats is connected to high levels of obesity, heart disease and diabetes.

Northerners Are Eating Too Much Saturated Fat

The people of Scotland are the biggest consumers of saturated fat with adults on average eating as much as 55g everyday which is almost three times as much as the recommended amount. The recommended amount of saturated fat is 20g a day for women and 30g a day for men and in many northern areas such as Lancashire, Yorkshire and the Midlands they are eating too much of it.

The figures show that people in London and in the South East of the United Kingdom are only eating a little bit more saturated fat than they should at 24g daily on average. The regions of the South West and East Anglia while eating more than the recommended daily amount were still consuming less than 30g daily on average.

This research is important because while it is obvious that the north of England is more overweight than the south these figures could give the British government some idea as to why this is the case. The research was originally paid for by the food manufacturer Unilever to help with its marketing but could be put to more use to help in the fight against obesity.

Overall it is estimated that about 80 percent of individuals in the United Kingdom are eating too much saturated fat for good health and the British government should make an effort to reduce this figure. The British diet consists of a lot of dairy products and meat which is full of saturated fats as well as sweet things like biscuits and cakes. You should try and limit the amount of these foods in your diet and when you do consume fat try to go for things which contain natural unsaturated fats such as olive oil and oily fish.
