A new study being examined by the Ukmedix News Team claims that contrary to previous research the simple act of being overweight does not lead to a lower sperm count in men. The research which was presented at the Endocrine Society's 90th AGM is likely to cause shock waves in scientific circles because it had previously been established for a long time that heavier men were less fertile.

The research which was performed by scientists from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine looked at almost 300 men in New York between the ages of eighteen and 50. The men who were generally overweight had a whole range of different Body Mass Index scores.
The researchers who were led by Doctor Nanette Santoro clearly saw that a higher body weight was intrinsically linked to lower testosterone but they said that this did not necessarily mean that fertility was affected. They went on to say that low testosterone would only cause infertility if it was at the extremely low levels and that a slightly reduced testosterone level did not necessarily affect fertility. They also noted there was no evidence that obesity had any effect on other biochemical reproductive compounds.
The researchers also examined whether smoking and a number of other factors had an affect on sperm quality but were unable to conclusively find a link except in the case of those men who had previously undergone urological surgery. The researchers examined sperm concentration, sperm motility and any changes in sperm morphology for the different factors that could be associated with male infertility.
While this research may come as a relief to overweight and obese men they should be well aware that while their sperm count may not be affected they are putting themselves in a much higher risk category for erectile dysfunction. If you suffer from erectile dysfunction no matter how good your sperm count you will not be able to reproduce so in a sense being overweight has a direct correlation to the ability to reproduce. Men who are in physical good shape are also able to perform for longer and better in the bedroom.
