New Years Resolution To Get Your Kids Healthy

Millions of people talk about losing weight for their New Year’s Resolution but very few talk about a resolution which involves improving the health and the weight of their children. Rather than just focusing on your own health why not try and have an effect on the weight of those around you? As a parent you are the single most important influence on the likelihood of your child becoming obese and staying obese for the rest of his or her life. Children who get to the age of thirteen obese are statistically very unlikely to lose weight and keep that weight off permanently. There are a number of small and simple things you can do which could have a huge impact on the lifelong health of your children.

Firstly, concentrate on portion size. When you feed your children don’t assume that they will stop eating when they are full because they won’t! Give your children a smaller helping of food and tell them they can have seconds if they like rather than loading up the plate at the beginning. There is a psychological benefit of dividing a meal into two portions rather than one big one. Also the time between the first and the second portion should be dragged out as much as possible because your children will probably forget that they were still hungry in this time.
Introduce healthy snacks! Children are easily led and therefore it is easy to excitedly announce snacks of oranges, apples or any fruit without them noticing that all the high calorie sugary sweets have disappeared. You won’t be able to completely rid your house of sweets and chocolate but keep them just for very special occasions. Talk about nutrition with your children. Explain how fruit and vegetables makes them healthy and strong and that fried fatty food makes them fat. Education is the way forward if your children are to be healthy in the long term.
Some people we have spoken to at Ukmedix News claim that when they had their own children they placed an extra importance on a healthy diet and this led to them losing weight too. It’s no good trying to get your children to eat healthily if you don’t lead by example.

Good article! We all need to focus on our children as well as ourselves, the truth is we will do better ourselves if we feel we have to live up to what we are teaching them.
