Just because it comes without a prescription and is available over the counter does not necessarily mean that it is safe! A slimming pill, weight loss supplement, diet aid or whatever you like to call it can be extremely dangerous and can do your body a lot of harm. Unfortunately despite warnings from nutritionists and weight loss experts in the United Kingdom these slimming aids are still widely available in health shops and gyms around the country.

A typical over the counter weight loss product will contain large amounts of caffeine or a guarana extract which again contains extra caffeine as well as white willow bark extract containing salicylic acid. Other compounds found in the products are analog versions of epinephrine such as synephrine, (the pure epinephrine compound is in fact illegal) and citrus aurantium which is described as or bitter orange extract.
If you think that because something is natural it is harmless you are greatly mistaken because even viper venom and tarantula bite are natural but this does not make them any less dangerous.
What most of these ‘natural supplements’ do is speed up your heart beat so that you burn off more calories throughout the day. You are likely to start to sweat, get extremely nervous, have difficulty concentrating and generally feel pretty awful. You also put a great deal of strain on your heart and this can be dangerous if you want to exercise. The caffeine in many of these tablets also causes dehydration.
Other side effects linked to the use of weight loss supplements containing the above ingredients include hypertension, insomnia, headaches, dry mouth and over the long term cardio problems. One case we heard about at Ukmedix News involved a young healthy man who entered a rowing contest and who had taken a slimming supplement in the morning. He ended up being hospitalised after his heart was strained and he came close to a heart attack.
Some diet pills are even known to create an addiction because of the so called high that they create. People therefore will also find it difficult to eat healthily or normally without them after they get used to them for some time. Men and women should only use prescription weight loss medications after a consultation with a doctor. In the United Kingdom the two weight loss medication which have regulatory approval are Reductil and Xenical.
