More Evidence On Mediterranean Diet Presented

Professor Buckland sought to identify weaknesses in earlier research

A huge clinical study involving over 40,000 Spanish individuals who were tracked for an average of a decade shows that following a Mediterranean diet could significantly lower the chances of you suffering from a heart attack or other cardio diseases.

More Evidence On Mediterranean Diet Presented

The clinical evidence collected by Professor Genevieve Buckland and her associates from the Catalan Institute of Oncology based in Barcelona was recently published in the American Journal of Epidemiology. While there has been plenty of similar evidence presented in research papers Professor Buckland sought to identify weaknesses in earlier research into the Mediterranean diet. The study involved extremely careful analysis of body measurements, physical activity, smoking, medical history and obviously detailed documentation of how much and what food substances were consumed by the participants.

In order to compute the data participants were given a ranking based on an eighteen point scale which identified how closely their eating patterns adhered to the Mediterranean lifestyle. The researchers said that when they examined the data the higher the score the less likely the participants were to have a heart attack or experience any heart disease.

Those men and women who scored higher points were 40 percent less likely to suffer from cardio disease when compared to those with low points. In fact the researchers said that for each extra point gained in the Mediterranean diet ranking system was linked to a six percent reduced chance of suffering from cardio disease and that a two percent increase had a significant “protective effect”.

This research will yet again point to the growing evidence of the importance of a diet full of fruit, vegetables, fresh fish and a little bit of olive oil. If you are the sort of person who finds dieting difficult because of your love of food the Mediterranean diet is the way forward because it is arguably the healthiest tasty diet plan that is possible to follow. The Mediterranean diet also has such a big variety that you are unlikely to get bored of it.

What good news! I love that sort of food an thought it is too fattening, I am going to live on it from now on. Can I have a couple of slices of bread too?
