Michelle Obama On America's Obesity Problem

Michelle Obama, First Lady of America and wife of President Barack Obama has been launching her own healthy eating drive in America and has warned about the negative health impact of obesity. Michelle who was interviewed by ABC News said that it was time to be proactive and time to stop being complacent.

Michelle Obama On America

She specifically noted that health care reform in America would not be able to solve all the problems of obesity and that the best way to deal with the health care deficit in America would be to get people to lose weight.

Giving sensible advice she said that parents must encourage their children to walk every day and to eat less calorie laden food. She said the American taxpayer was spending around $120 billion dollars every year in extra health care costs generated by obesity related illnesses.

In the interview with ABC News she stopped short of calling the obesity problem in America ‘a crisis’ but she did say that she felt the American people were ready for this change and were likely to be more receptive to obesity prevention initiatives because the problem was getting severe.

Michelle’s message was one of personal responsibility and she said that while the state could help individuals, at the end of the day they had to be responsible for their own actions and decide what and what not to eat. She did say however that the Federal government would be providing healthy meals for children in America at schools which she hoped would have an impact on educating children about nutrition.

She highlighted that the problem of obesity was more severe among African American and Latino children and that millions of them were obese.

At Ukmedix News we genuinely hope that Michelle Obama will have more success in getting the American people to see the errors of their ways and that her Healthy Eating campaign will bear fruit sooner rather than later.

Good article! Schools should start giving nutrition classes in nursary schools, starting with pictures of food with 'good' and 'bad' written on the picture cards. Little Children remember visual teaching.

I am a school principle in LA and I think I will try to do something like this. Thanks for the idea.
