What do Margarita Zavala and Michelle Obama have in common? Well they are both First Ladies of extremely obese nations! Michelle Obama is the First Lady of The United States of America which takes the prize for being the world’s most obese nation and Margarita Zavala is the First Lady of Mexico which is the world’s second most obese nation. Recently these two women met at the White House in Washington and discussed among other things the chronic obesity problem that they have in their countries and discussed initiatives that could do something about it. In particular Michelle Obama spoke about her new drive to eradicate childhood obesity in America.

Mexico which until twenty years ago was a relatively healthy nation has become increasingly obese since the arrival of American fast food. The Mexican people’s traditional diet of beans, fruit and vegetables has been replaced with tons of American junk food. If anyone ever needs any evidence that the arrival of fast food restaurants causes obesity you only need to look at Mexico! As well as having the second highest obesity rates in the world, Mexico City can take the prize for having the most obese police force.
What these women should do if they are serious about tackling obesity in their countries is make a stand against fast food! They should produce a joint statement saying that advertising of fast food to children should be completely banned and that massive educational campaigns warning of the dangers of eating Americanised fast food should be promoted throughout both countries especially to children.
Unfortunately, their husbands would probably be furious if they were to make such a statement without official approval but the fact is if they are serious, and they want to get results then that is what they should be doing! Instead they probably just had a polite chat touched on a few worrying problems, promised to meet again and discuss further and then did absolutely nothing!
Ukmedix News reckons that it’s about time that Michelle Obama and Margarita Zavala started to walk their talk and do something to actually make a difference before another generation of children is consigned to a lifetime of obesity related disease.
