A fascinating study done by the insurance company Aviva shows that it is not just women who have an obsession with having a perfect shape but increasingly men too! The study shows that many men tend to follow fad diet regimes to lose weight quickly especially in order to get in shape for summer. The insurance company study shows that as many as 50% of men are “desperate to slim” and that 1/3 of them are concerned about the number of calories they consume when they go to the pub. Drinking a few beers every day can put hundreds of calories on your daily calorie count.

The biggest driver for this new obsession of men to have perfect shapes is the media which portrays muscle bound men as being the ideal. Much of the weight obsession that women have in the United Kingdom is driven by media images of the perfect shape. In fact the media is often criticised for portraying unrealistic body shapes which make both men and women feel insecure about the way they appear and which has been identified as the main reason why teenage girls become anorexic or bulimic.
Unfortunately the studies also show that while 50% of men were worried about their weight only 13% of them were really concerned about high cholesterol and elevated heart rates which are by- products of being overweight. This goes to show how men value their cosmetic appearance far over their real health.
At Ukmedix News we have always preached that weight loss should be approached not purely for its cosmetic goals but more importantly for the fact that it gives you good health which you will appreciate especially as you get older. People who have lived a life with a pattern of Yo-Yo dieting often end up having health complications.
