Low Carb Diet Produces Low Cholesterol

An ongoing research project into three particular diets has come out with some interesting findings with regard to what you should be eating. The three diets in question, firstly a low carbohydrate diet, secondly a Mediterranean style diet and lastly a very low fat diet were compared over a two year period. Interestingly the results showed that a Mediterranean style diet and a low car diet actually helped individuals to shed a little more weight than the traditional low fat diet. The study is thought to be one of the largest clinical trials done with different diets with 322 people taking part.

Low Carb Diet Produces Low Cholesterol

The research was taken extremely seriously and all the participants were made to live in a controlled environment, (a completely isolated nuclear-research facility based in Israel) so that there could be no cheating during the research. The results of the survey will be hailed by supporters of the Atkins diet because it showed that not only did the people who ate the low carb diet lose the most weight that also that they had the most improved levels of cholesterol.  Opponents of the Atkins diet often say that while it does produce weight loss it can boost cholesterol levels unhealthily.

This fascinating new research was published in The New England Journal of Medicine. It was partly financed by the Atkins Research Foundation which may raise questions about impartiality however the head author of the study Professor Iris Shai from the Ben-Gurion University said that they had absolutely no part in the way the study was done and in how the results were reported.

Interestingly men did much better on the low carb diet than on the Mediterranean diet however women on the other hand did best when following the Mediterranean diet as opposed to the low carb diet.

At Ukmedix News we do not advocate one particular diet and we like to promote weight loss and healthy eating principles which must be incorporated into your lifestyle. We say that diets must be kept simple and must be practical and tasty. All diet plans must also contain different food groups so that all nutritional requirements are met.
