Following the huge outcry after Lincoln University in America required that obese students were to be enrolled in obligatory fitness classes before they could get their degrees, the head of the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation has backed down and changed the requirement.

Instead of making the fitness classes obligatory they will now be strongly recommended to obese students. Professor James DeBoy who runs the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation said that it was the right thing for Lincoln University students to become healthy. No matter what anyone said he explained nobody could ignore that obesity causes heart disease, cancer, diabetes and even musculoskeletal disorders.
There was a lot of opposition to Professor James DeBoy’s original plan because many people said that he was discriminating against obese students and that obesity should not play any part in whether you are allowed to graduate from university or not. At Ukmedix News we can see both sides of the argument very clearly. Obesity should never prevent anybody from getting a degree but at the same time obese individuals should understand that continuing to live unhealthy lives will restrict them from achieving their goals as much as, if not more than, not having a degree. Obesity ruins lives and despite what people say no one likes living with it.
Professor DeBoy said that all students would now be required to go to an introductory health class and it would be suggested that some of them enroll in the ‘Fitness for Life’ Program for their time at Lincoln University. It is important that universities make an effort to educate students about healthy living because very often it is the first time that they have lived away from home and therefore the first time that they are 100 percent responsible for their eating and exercise habits.
