More evidence that eating healthy when pregnant has long term health benefits for your children has been shown by a new study conducted by scientists from the French National Agricultural Research Institute.

They said that their research showed that eating a range of foods with omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, walnuts and pumpkin seeds helped the intestines to develop in unborn children better which in turn boosted the immune system. The researchers said that because the consumption of these types of food was on the decline more children would be at risk of suffering from food allergies.
The researchers found that expectant mothers who consumed a lot of polyunsaturated fatty acids produced children who had more permeable gut walls. This meant that more bacteria and food substances passed into the body which in turn triggered the immune system to produce more antibodies. Dr Gaëlle Boudry explained that there was a clear link between the consumption of polyunsaturated fatty acids and the strength of a baby's gut immune system. The research was published in the Journal of Physiology.
In the UK the number of people suffering from food allergy problems is on the increase and some reports show that over the last twenty years the number of people admitted to hospitals as a result has risen drastically.
Other research which we have published at Ukmedix News shows that women who eat a lot of fish during pregnancy are more likely to have intelligent children and this is also thought to be as a result of the beneficial effects of omega 3 fatty acids.
Ukmedix News has also observed that some women let themselves go and overeat unhealthily when they are pregnant. When you're pregnant you should be aware that you are not just eating for yourself and that you are eating for the future long term health of your children.
