FSA's Simple Saturated Avoidance Tips

the best defence against obesity is common sense

The Food Standards Agency of the UK recently launched a whole lot of simple guidelines which we believe at Ukmedix News can make a big difference to your weight. We have often argued that by making small changes in the way you live over a long period of time will have a snowball effect which can get you down to a healthy weight.

One of the recommendations from the Food Standards Agency concerns the amount of saturated fat that we take in daily. Saturated fat which is found in red meat, dairy products, cakes and biscuits should be limited as much as possible. It doesn’t mean that you completely have to do away with these foods but you should be conscious of their saturated fat content and make small steps to limit their intake.

Small steps like buying butter and margarine with a low content of saturated fat can make a difference over time. If you consume a lot of milk then try to go for the lower fat semi-skimmed or skimmed milk versions. Also try to eat meat that is lower in saturated fat such as chicken, fish and Buffalo meat. Watch out for fatty meats like pork, beef especially if they come in the form of pies and pasties.

When you do eat meat pay attention to the way it is cooked. It is always better to have grilled food rather than fried food. When you go out for a kebab choose the shish kebabs that come with salad rather than going for the very high fat doner kebab version. In time you’ll find that you prefer the shish kebab and even looking at the doner will make your stomach churn.

There are literally hundreds of ways you can reduce your saturated fat intake by just making small choices daily. When you are in a restaurant it can often be difficult to stay away from the unhealthy options but even in a Chinese or Indian restaurant using your common sense by ordering steamed or grilled food and loads of vegetables will keep you slim.

Another simple tip is to avoid thin French fries and instead go for the larger chips because they absorb less fat and contain more natural potatoes. At the end of the day the best defence against obesity is common sense and you should always make use of it to keep yourself in shape.

The latest science does not support the idea that saturated fat is harmful. In fact it's refined carbohydrates that is driving the obesity and heart disease epidemic.
