The Canadian city of Calgary has decided to follow the lead set by New York City and implement a complete ban on any trans fats in its restaurants. Trans fats which are known to be the most “artery-clogging” type of fats are used in fast food restaurants all around the world. The advantage of trans fats is that they retain the flavour of the food for a longer time than normal fats and thus are very useful for commercial operations such as fast-food outlets. Trans fats are formed by cooking in hydrogenated vegetable oil. It is much healthier to cook chips and other deep fried items in natural oils as opposed to complex manufactured oils but natural oils tend to cost more and are therefore not so commercially viable.

Ukmedix News has learned that a number of nutritional experts are worried that too much hype is being made about these trans fat bans. Just because in New York City there are no trans fats at fast food restaurants does not mean that going to McDonald’s or Burger King and eating huge amounts of burgers and chips is now going to be healthy for you. There will still be a large level of fat in the chips at these establishments and you should always eat in moderation whether there are trans fats present or not.
At Ukmedix News we have seen evidence that individuals who have problems with their weight often are in denial about the reality of what they eat. We have also spoken to individuals who actually think that because trans fat is now banned in New York that eating out in restaurants over there will be a healthy experience. They do this to justify their desire to carry on eating as they like. You have to be brutally honest about your food consumption and make sure that you stay away from unhealthy food if you are serious about losing weight.
