How often have you heard the low carb brigade warn about the dangers of eating carbohydrates after sundown? A low carbohydrate diet is considered to be the most fashionable diet at the moment and some people follow it religiously, but as of yet Ukmedix News has not come across any clinical evidence to show that people who eat their carbohydrates before sundown will lose more weight than those people who consume their carbohydrates after sundown.

We like to question everything at Ukmedix News! So rather than just believing a weight loss statement even if it comes from a doctor or a qualified nutritionist we like to do our own searches and see whether what is being said is just a fashionable diet statement or something which can be backed up with credible medical evidence. In fact everybody should be questioning diet advice and asking for clinical sources and proof.
A recent study done in Israel claims that eating more carbs in the evening comes with a whole lot of health benefits and completely turns on its head the previously much repeated mantra about getting your carbs when the sun is up.
The study which was done with 100 obese Israeli police officers between the ages of 25 and 55 divided them into two separate groups both of whom were told to follow identical diets with a daily calorie intakes of between 1,300 to 1,500 calories. The makeup of both diets was 20% protein, 30-35% fat and 45-50% carbohydrates but the crucial difference was that one group consumed most of the carbohydrates in the evening while the other group spread their carb intake evenly during the day.
The volunteers each followed one of the diets for six months and the results showed that those who consumed the large amount of carbohydrates in the evening had a greater weight loss, a greater fat reduction and a smaller stomach circumference than those who spread their carbohydrate intake over the day.
The other interesting fact was that the evening carb group reported a greater satiety and satisfaction with their appetite throughout the whole day compared to the other group. The researchers said they believe that this was due to them having higher and steadier levels of the important hormone leptin which regulates appetite.
The evening carbohydrates group even reported improvements in cholesterol levels, glucose balance, insulin resistance and inflammation markers all of which are related to obesity.
The research was published by the medical journal Obesity and will come as a pleasant surprise to those people who like to eat a good plate of spaghetti at night. There's also a lot of anecdotal evidence that eating carbohydrates at night helps you to sleep better than if you eat a lot of protein.
