Drink Milk To Lose Weight Say Researchers

In the Ukmedix Newsroom this is not the first time we have come across scientific research which shows that dairy products can actually help people to lose weight. Traditionally dairy products are shunned by dieters and diet plans because they are full of fat, however new research done by Israeli scientists over the last two years concludes that the men and women who took part in their study and who drank a glass or two of milk daily lost more weight than those who did not.

Three hundred overweight men and women between 40 and 65 took part in this study and they were told to either follow a low fat, a low carbohydrate or a Mediterranean diet.  Irrespective of which diet they followed those volunteers who consumed 4oz. of milk daily lost 12 pounds on average by the end of the term compared to only 7 pounds for those men and women who consumed less than 4oz of milk daily.

The researchers said that there was a definite link between the amount of milk consumed and the amount of fat shed over the research period. They concluded that the extra milk boosted levels of vitamin D which has been shown in other studies to be deficient in obese people.

The research which will certainly be controversial in some circles should not be seen as a licence for dieting individuals to consume as much milk as they want but maybe should be viewed as highlighting the importance of getting an overall balanced diet. It may also be that those volunteers who drank milk were less likely to experience strong hunger pangs throughout the day which would therefore make them less likely to overeat and eat unhealthily.

Vitamin D which can be found in eggs, oily fish and many other natural products can also be absorbed by sitting in sunlight.  [don't get sunburned!]

This research was published in the respected American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
