A doctor and weight loss expert has been speaking out about the benefits of weight loss medications and said that if more obese individuals were to make use of them the numbers who required more serious treatments like gastric bands or stomach stapling would reduce considerably.

Dr Nick Finer from the Wellcome Clinical Research Facility based in Cambridge explained that weight loss medications can help around a third of all patients to lose ten percent of their overall body weight and 50 percent of patients to lose five percent of their body weight. He went on to say that many doctors were “missing opportunities” to help their obese patients by prescribing them weight loss medication. Dr Finer said that he will be speaking at the British Pharmacological Society Meeting to try and encourage more doctors to prescribe obesity drugs.
Dr Finer also commented on the fact that by spending money on weight loss medications the National Health Service could save itself millions of pounds by preventing obesity related illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease and many others. He said that the National Health Service should look at weight loss medications as an investment and not as a financial burden.
Doctors in the United Kingdom are allowed to prescribe two weight loss drugs, firstly Xenical which works by blocking the absorption of fat into the digestive system and secondly Reductil which is an appetite suppressant. Not only do these drugs help you to lose weight but clinical testing has shown them to be able to slow down the likelihood of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Weight loss drugs often help people who have a lot of weight to lose and who get demoralised by the slow pace of weight loss. If weight loss drugs like Reductil and Xenical are used properly in conjunction with a healthy diet they can make a difference between a successful weight loss plan and a failed weight loss plan.
