Diet Drugs For Dogs

The weight problem in the United States is not just confined to humans, as there is a lot of evidence that shows that dogs are getting obese too.  In America it is now possible to buy weight loss drugs for your dog as well as for yourself. The first weight loss drug for overweight and obese dogs was recently launched named Slentrol.

Slentrol is made by Pfizer, (the world largest drug company that makes the world famous erectile dysfunction drug Viagra) and Pfizer claim that it can make your dog lose weight. The director of the Centre for Veterinary Medicine at the FDA welcomed the arrival of Slentrol for dogs and said that it could help in addressing what is a growing problem in the United States.

At present obesity for humans is around 35% in America but the dog obesity statistics show only that around 5% of dogs are obese making the problem far less severe but it is growing and is worse than it was a decade ago. Any dog weighing 20% over its normal weight classified as obese. The dog diet drug works both as an appetite suppressant and also prevents some fat from absorbing into the digestive system too and is administered in the form of a liquid.

The drug is only allowed to be used with a prescription form a vet as it has some harmful side effects like diarrhea and nausea. The FDA has warned that any person who tries to take the drug them selves could end up very sick and the drugs must be used in dogs only and not with cats or any other animals.

Dogs are luckier than humans in that they can consume more fat than we can before they start to put on weight. Slentrol must be used as part of a lower fat diet for dogs and not just as an easy way for them to lose weight.
