Alzheimer's Disease Can Be Prevented By Calorie Restriction

Written by Stuart Stevens | Wednesday, 21 June 2006

New research conducted on mice in the United States shows that eating a low calorie diet over a long period may stop the symptoms of the mind destroying Alzheimer's disease.  In the research program the two groups of mice were subjected to different quantities of food and the results clearly showed that the mice that ate the smaller diet (30% less) were found to produce a protein that was a protection on their brains to Alzheimer's disease.

The diet was continued for 6 months and the mice were then subjected to an autopsy in which the scientists saw that the brains of the low quantity mice had higher levels of the anti aging protein SIRT1 that protects against Alzheimers. SIRT1 has been known for some time to boost longevity and general good health and that is why it probably works against Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimers disease is a terrible disease as it is a slow and distressing lapse into complete forgetfulness and memory loss for its sufferers. Around four and a half million American people have Alzheimer's disease and at present there is not a cure for it. This new research could shed some light on a cure for the condition.

Ukmedix has previously reported on research that shows that calorie restriction can lead to longer lives and that the people of Okinawa in Japan can claim to be the longest living humans in the world and they credit that with eating a small diet of healthy food high in fruit vegetable and oily fish.
