Rather than just existing with and managing type 2 diabetes it may be possible to completely cure yourself of the illness. According to a team of British scientists if you are prepared to starve yourself for 8 weeks, the illness may disappear completely even when you start to eat normally again.

Professor Roy Taylor who runs the magnetic resonance imaging unit with his colleagues at Newcastle University examined eleven volunteers who had become diabetics late in life and who had been suffering for a number of years.

These volunteers who on average weighed 220 lbs were put on a 600 calorie a day diet which consisted of a diet drink and vegetables like broccoli, asparagus or cabbage. An average man would normally eat about 2,000 calories a day and this restricted 600 calorie diet was done for eight weeks.

The results which were announced by Professor Taylor at the San Diego conference of the American Diabetes Association showed that after just one week all of the patients had a fasting blood sugar level which was completely normal. It was also seen that after eight weeks the volunteers had shed an average of 33 lbs there were no signs of the diabetes.

Three months after the end of the study seven out of eleven of the volunteers were still free of diabetes despite returning to their normal diet. The average weight gain of the eleven volunteers during those three months was 6.5 lbs.

Professor Taylor said that his personal theory was that the extra fat around the pancreas which was observed in the volunteers was preventing it from producing insulin which was required to balance energy levels in the body. He said that after the extreme 600 calorie diet the fat levels in the pancreas of every single volunteer was normal.

With millions of people suffering from type 2 diabetes in the United Kingdom and a huge amount of money spent every single year on diabetes medication, maybe it would be cheaper to monitor diabetics carefully and get them to lose weight using this restricted calorie diet?

At Ukmedix News we would recommend that you speak to your doctor before following an extremely low calorie diet like the above.
