Children From Poor Families Not More Likely To Be Obese

Unfortunately unhealthy food is often cheap food

At Ukmedix News we have published studies that show that low income families in both America and the United Kingdom tend to suffer from obesity more so than high income families. A new study however debunks the idea and says that the situation which is called “food insecurity” which is classified as having to make poor food choices because of a lack of money has no correlation to increased obesity in the United States.

Children From Poor Families Not More Likely To Be Obese

The research which is published in The Journal of Nutrition will be controversial and is likely to be challenged by other studies. Nevertheless Craig Gundersen, a professor of agricultural and consumer economics from the University of Illinois who was one of the co-authors of the research said that despite many children from food insecure families being obese there was no link between their obesity and their food insecurity. For the study over 2,500 children from low income families were studied in detail and the results showed that they were just as likely to be obese as wealthier families.

Unfortunately unhealthy food is often cheap food and there is a perception that eating healthily costs money. There is a certain amount of truth in this especially as fast food is very cheap and very fattening. However it is also worth bearing in mind that buying fresh fruits and vegetables at supermarkets is also very cheap and therefore there is no real excuse to argue that financial constraints cause you to be overweight. Eating healthy however does consume a lot of time as healthy meals tend to need to be prepared and cooked slowly.

In the old days poor people tended to be thin and only the wealthy could afford to be overweight because of food scarcity something which is definitely not the case anymore. There are now more people who are considered to be obese in the world than people who are undernourished because of famine and food scarcity.
