If you have been following the American version of the TV program Dancing with the Stars you probably will have seen Chaz Bono dancing away with his professional dancing partner Lacey Schwimmer. Chaz, to put it mildly is a pretty large man and this obviously makes it difficult for him to prance around the stage but given his weight he has not been doing a bad job.

Chaz however is angry because he says that he has been unfairly criticised because of his weight. Talking recently on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show he accused the judges of having double standards and picking on him not only because he was overweight but also because he was a man. He said that overweight women who had participated on the show had never been criticised because they were overweight but just because he was a man the judges felt it was fair play to ridicule him.
Chaz definitely has a point because it is generally accepted that if you make derogatory comments about a man being overweight to his face it is fair play, but if you do the same about a woman it is considered cruel and extremely rude. In fact, any judge on Dancing with the Stars who made the same comments about a woman that were made to Chaz Bono would probably end up having to make a public apology and would be called a bitch or a pig depending on their gender.
Chaz Bono said that when overweight women came on the show and said they were trying to lose weight they were given support and encouragement but he said that in his case he had been called a penguin and an Ewok which he said was unacceptable and he was sick of it.
At Ukmedix News we are fascinated with the public perception of obesity and how this impacts on the obese people themselves. We have often argued that it is much more offensive to call somebody fat than many other seemingly far more derogatory insults. In fact at Ukmedix News we say that the new F Word is Fat!
