Supermarket Sales Unruffled

Despite a recent case of poultry in the UK being infected with the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus it seems that the population is not panicking yet and that sales of chicken and other birds are still good. A number of big supermarket stores have claimed that people are still buying the UK’s favourite bird and that this is a good sign that the public believe that the authorities have the situation under control and that there is no reason to panic. Sales of chicken all over the EU are also staying at the same levels. The supermarkets Sainsbury, Asda, Waitrose and Morrisons on questioning all said that they had no significant declines in their poultry sales over the last few days.

UK Sales Of Poultry Stay Stable

One supermarket did say however that it had noticed a ‘small drop’ in bird sales but was not 100% sure that this was due to the recent bird flu scare. They said that sales of eggs had remained stable suggesting that the dip in bird sales could have been caused by something else. The French public it seems are more likely to panic as when a bird flu outbreak was reported in France last year sales dropped by as much as 30% and took some months to recover to normal levels. In Holland where millions of birds are imported from the UK the news was still good for supermarkets and the poultry industry with no loss of sales reported. The same could be said for Hungary that has had its own bird flu scare.

At Ukmedix we are taking the UK governments advice which is that there is no real threat at present from the bird flu virus. The virus has yet to be transmitted to one person in the United Kingdom and we hope that it will stay that way.
