Researchers in Spain claim that women who drink beer on a regular basis have stronger bones and thus are much less likely to suffer from osteoporosis as they grow older. They said that it is believed the level of silicon in beer could be responsible for slowing down the aging effect on bones which ends up causing fractures.

The research which was published in the medical journal Nutrition was done by taking ultrasound scans of nearly 1,700 females with an average age of 48. A clear correlation between their drinking habits and the quality and density of their bones was noted by the researchers. Osteoporosis tends to occur first in the hands before moving on to other parts of the body and is especially common in women after they go through menopause.
The researchers said that those women who drank less than one pint of beer a day had the same bone densities as those women who drank more than one pint today suggesting therefore that even a little bit of beer daily was enough.
The other good news is that chocolate could save your life! A report appearing in the Journal of Internal Medicine claims that men and women who eat chocolate regularly reduce the risk of suffering from death after heart attacks by three times when compared to those who do not eat chocolate often.
Other studies have shown that a little bit of chocolate can lower blood pressure but this is the first time that a study has been done to actually show that chocolate could save lives. This new study which was carried out by researchers at the Karolinska Institute based in Stockholm and the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center based in Boston concluded that it was only chocolate and not other sweet items which had a beneficial effect.
Now before you go running off to wash down chunks of chocolate with pints of beer remember that obesity is the number one risk factor for heart attacks and heart disease so don’t overdo it!
