The people of China traditionally are known to be healthy and thin and this is largely accredited to their diet of rice and vegetables which more often than not is cooked by steaming as opposed to by being fried. New reports seen by Ukmedix News show that however things are changing in the world’s most populated nation and that the Chinese people are now increasingly overweight and obese.

A new study makes clear that the rate of increase of obesity in China is only second to the rate of increase in Mexico. The author of the study Professor Barry Popkin from the Carolina Population Centre says that what is happening in China is similar to what is happening in other developing countries in other parts of the world. Chinese people are now eating far more fat and are consuming less fruit and vegetables which has led to a big increase in the number of Chinese people suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure and heart attacks.
The new figures for levels of obesity in China which were published in the medical journal Health Affairs now show that over 25 percent of Chinese people are heavier than they should be. Not only are the Chinese people eating less healthily but they are also getting less exercise as more of them give up manual labour jobs and start working in offices.
The Chinese government needs to act before it is too late and they need to understand that investment in healthy eating programs for the Chinese people will pay huge dividends in the future. By investing in these health care programs which encourage healthy eating and exercise they will prevent huge health bills in the future caused by overweight individuals suffering from a huge array of obesity related disease.
