A few months ago Ukmedix News reported about how football teams in Bolivia who had to play on the Altiplano which is over 4,000 meters above sea level were sometimes being administered the erectile dysfunction medication Viagra. Research has shown that at high altitudes the ability of Viagra to open blood vessels means that oxygen is absorbed into the body more efficiently. Many of the football team denied that they would give the Viagra drug to the players despite rumours that its use was common practice.

However recently a physiotherapist who used to work for a Bolivian team called Blooming admitted that he had on a number of occasions given Viagra to the players that he worked with when the team played at high altitudes. He explained that the Blooming players who were used to playing closer to sea level were at a disadvantage when they played higher up. The physio who hails from nearby Chile was completely frank about the use of Viagra in national newspaper and explained that some players suffered from altitude problems more than others.

He went on to explain that he gave the players the Viagra mixed in with fruit juice before games and said that there was no reason why the should not use it as it was not banned by any sporting organisation including the World Anti Doping Agency or by FIFA. He also told the newspaper that he didn’t tell the players what was in the concoctions that he gave them before matches.

The World Anti Doping Agency is still waiting for the results of clinical trials done using the Viagra drug to see whether they should place it on the list of banned substances for professional sportsmen. You should not use Viagra to enhance your sporting performance unless a doctor specifically gives it to you for that purpose.
