He says that he wants to bring smiles to the faces of men

Mayor Marcelo Ebrard who we have written about before at Ukmedix News is gearing up his campaign for the midterm elections coming up for the position of Mayor of Mexico City. He has become famous for his campaign of offering free Viagra to men over the age of 60 in a move which he hoped would boost his popularity massively and seems to have been partly successful.

Mayor Ebrard however says that his popularity is only slightly to do with giving out free Viagra and has much more to do with the fact that he has launched hundreds of initiatives to make Mexico City a much more pleasant place to live. For example the over the Christmas period he organised the largest skating rink in the world to be constructed right in the middle of the city and has made the city far more walking friendly by banning cars on many streets in the city centre.

His latest initiative which will probably gain as much publicity as his Viagra stunt is one called ‘Bésame Mucho’ which translates from the Spanish as ‘Kiss me a lot’. The initiative which will take place over the weekend of Valentine’s Day has been described as a ‘massive kiss in’ which will try and break the world record for the amount of people kissing in one particular place. The slogan ‘Bésame Mucho’ is being used by the tourism promotion section of the city in an attempt to get rid of its negative image.

Despite all these other initiatives Mayor Ebrard is still known and spoken about because of his promotion of free Viagra. He says that he wants to bring smiles to the faces of men in Mexico City who have reached their golden years and when criticised has responded that “everyone has the right to be happy”. He explained that the poorer men of Mexico were not able to get health insurance and therefore the idea of giving them free Viagra was in part to restore the dignity of older men who were suffering from erectile dysfunction due to their age.

There is also a chronic obesity problem in Mexico and obesity is one of the most obvious indicators for high rates of erectile dysfunction. Public health officials have also spoken about how offering men free Viagra means that they meet a doctor and get help for other illnesses such as depression, diabetes and hypertension which could be causing the erectile dysfunction in the first place.
