Viagra Can Mean Lack Of Smell Function

A previous unknown side effect of Viagra is that it can cause you not to be able to smell effectively. The side effects label of Viagra does note that the erectile dysfunction drug can cause you to suffer from nasal congestion especially in the higher doses but this new finding by a German research team looked specifically at Viagra’s ability to impair the smell function.
The Journal of Urology that published the study looked at 20 men who were given Viagra doses of 50mg, 100mg or a placebo pill and then were asked to smell various scents from an odour-dispensing machine. The researchers from the University of Dresden’s Medical School tested for an odour detection threshold, for odour discrimination and lastly for the ability to identify different odours.
The good news is that the lower dose of only 50mg had no significant effect on the ability for the men to smell when compared with the placebo group but the bad news is that the 100mg Viagra dose caused a significant reduction in smelling ability in all three of the categories.
The researchers say that the likely reason for this is simple nasal congestion and not anything else more serious but nevertheless should be borne in mind by erectile dysfunction sufferers who use Viagra. The loss of smell function will only be temporary and will last as long as the Viagra works which is for about 4 hours.
While this Viagra research is relevant and shouldn’t cause too much worry to Viagra users it will be of interest to men who have noticed that they don’t smell as well after using Viagra.
In the Ukmedix newsroom one bright spark quipped that if he had the choice between loss of smell with good erectile function and perfect smell and a poor erectile function he knew which one he would go for!
