Counterfeit Viagra is becoming a big problem in Pakistan and it is being sold on street corners quite openly in all major cities. The problem is that due to the illegal nature of the sales, there is no regulation of the product and much of the stuff sold is substandard and in some cases even dangerous.
A leading newspaper in Pakistan said that the Punjabi medical authorities had impounded nearly five hundred below standard and counterfeit drugs last year, less than 20% of which contained the active ingredient of Viagra (sildenafil citrate), which is not licenced for sale in Pakistan except in Pfizer's Viagra. Some of the drug sellers were in prison now but the illegal trade continued to flourish with small laboratories setting up in quiet remote areas.
Doctors and legal erectile dysfunction drug manufacturers are uging the Pakistani government to pass laws allowing the sale and manufacture of sildenafil citrate without further ado. They say that only then will the sale of erectile dysfunction medicines be able to be regulated and above board and prevent abuse from criminal operators.
Viagra is able to be bought legally in Pakistan but is expensive compared to the black market drugs and allowing other locally made sildenafil citrate drugs to be sold legally along with Viagra would help kill this illegal and dangerous market.
