A new study done in Canada confirms what many doctors and health professionals have been suspecting for some time namely that Viagra can be used as a drug to treat depression as well as erectile dysfunction.
The team of researchers from the University Health Network based in Toronto noted that a lot of men who have erection difficulties also are likely to suffer from mild levels of depression and a general dissatisfaction with life. Other studies have looked into the erectile dysfunction and depression link but tended to focus on men who had more severe depression. This new study specifically focused on men who only suffered from mild depression.
Dr Kennedy who led the research team looked at almost 200 men who had been suffering from erection difficulties for about 4 years and were also seen to be suffering from mild but not severe depression. The men were picked at random to get a 6 weeks treatment course of Viagra or to receive 6 weeks of placebo tablets.
At the end of the 6 week period the men who had been given the Viagra were seen to have a 47% lowering in their depression rating which classed them as only having minimal depression. The men who were given the placebo pill also registered a reduction in depression levels but a much smaller one of 26% that meant that they were still classed as being mildly depressed.
The researchers also looked at the sexual function of the men and as expected the Viagra improved it greatly. In fact at the end of the 6 weeks the rating for successful sexual intercourse was 77% for the Viagra takers and only 40 % for the placebo group.
Also it was observed that 63% of men taking Viagra said that they had absolutely no erection difficulties whereas only 53% of those taking the placebo said the same. The researchers felt that Viagra significantly improved the quality of life for the men and it shows that sometimes Viagra can be a help to depressed men.
