There is much discussion on the internet and in the print media about a recent study which shows that using the erectile dysfunction medication Viagra could harm the fertility of a man. The study which was done at Queen’s University in Belfast was done by taking sperm samples from willing volunteers and placing them in Viagra solutions. The scientists said that this would mimic the amount of Viagra present in the blood circulation of a man who had taken a 100mg dose of the impotence medication.

When compared to sperm which had not been submitted to the Viagra solution the researchers said that while the sperm was more active, part of it called the acrosome was more likely to get damaged and thus it would make it more difficult for it to enter into the membrane which surrounds the female egg. In essence what the researchers are saying is that the Viagra makes the sperm react too quickly and thus the acrosome breaks open too early.
At Ukmedix News we have also seen other research which was done a few years ago at the same University on animals given large doses of Viagra. It was seen that a similar effect was observed and that fertility was slightly lower with those mice given the Viagra.
The researchers were very careful to point out that there was absolutely no evidence of damaged embryos as a result of taking Viagra. You should remember that so many million men have taken the Viagra drug all around the world and there have been no abnormal cases linked to its use.
A lot of doctors however argue that the fact that Viagra enables normal men to have sex more often actually greatly increases his chances of reproducing successfully. The lower fertility of a man due to Viagra has not been properly proven and is now only a hypothesis which needs to be studied further.
At Ukmedix News we will be looking for more relevant research on the link between Viagra and fertility and will inform our readers of any new developments immediately.
