Diabetic Women May Benefit From Viagra

Italian researchers from the University of Catania have submitted a study to a leading medical journal in which they claim that the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra can help women who suffer for female sexual dysfunction due to the onset of diabetes. Medical experts are aware that diabetes affects sexual function in both men and women and that diabetic women suffer from higher levels of vaginal dryness and soreness during intercourse.

The research was conducted on 32 females suffering from type-1 diabetes who had experienced normal sexual function before getting diabetes and were now have sexual function problems. The women were given Viagra or a placebo pill for eight weeks and then for the following eight weeks the treatments were reversed and the women who previously had been given the placebo recieved the Viagra. They were told to take the pill 60 minutes before engaging in sex.

The results showed very clearly that the use of Viagra gave the women better levels of arousal, more orgasms and an overall greater enjoyment of sex. The frequency of sex and the desire for sex did not change with Viagra use. The researchers used a sophisticated ultrasound machines to test the blood flow levels in the clitoris of each woman and it appeared the the Viagra helped blood flow in this region.

The study which needs further research and testing suggests that Viagra may be the answer to sexual dysfunction caused by diabetes in women. The use of Viagra in women has not been given FDA or EMEA approval and Pfizer has abandoned plans to have the drug licenced in this regard after poor responses from women who used it.

Sexual function drugs are known to produce high levels of positive responses due to the placebo effect in both men and women and the Italian researchers were conscious of this during the study.
