The recent press announcement of Tiger Woods has been hailed by cynics as purely a way to get a whole lot of new sponsorship deals after he was dropped by the consulting firm Accenture and the telecommunications giant AT&T. While some of his sponsors stood by him, such as Nike it is important for him that he continues to portray a positive image to the media if he wants them to stick with him in the long term.

Funnily enough, some media experts even said that this recent controversy surrounding Tiger Woods’ sexual escapades could even make him more marketable in the future. There has even been talk of the drug giant Pfizer using him as the face of Viagra. Many people laugh when they hear this but golf is played by many man over the age of 50 and this is very much a target market for Viagra and other erectile dysfunction medications.
Ten years ago associating itself with a product like Viagra would have implied that you had a sexual problem yourself and that you were unable to maintain an erection however partly due to changing attitudes and also partly due to marketing efforts Viagra is often perceived now as a sexual relationship booster rather than a medication for people who have problems.
In the same way that Tiger Woods endorsed the energy drink Gatorade with the slogan "Is it in you?" if he landed a sponsorship deal with Pfizer for Viagra he could give the impression that Viagra was just sexual Gatorade as opposed to a medication for men with erectile dysfunction.
Tiger Woods even has exactly the right name for erectile dysfunction medication. Tiger as in ‘Easy Tiger’ and even his surname ‘Woods’ plays on the expression ‘Got Wood’ meaning to have an erection!
The problem is really whether the market will take him seriously if he lands the sponsorship deal with Pfizer or whether they would just think he was taking the Mickey. To be honest it is extremely unlikely that Tiger Woods would accept to be the face of Viagra but no harm in thinking about it!
