The people of Wales are up there with the most overweight of Europe according to a UK government report has revealed. Statistics show that inn Wales the number of obese people has doubled over the last decade and now over half of them are clinically overweight and almost one in 5 is obese. Women were seen to be slightly less overweight and obese than men in Wales.
In the whole of the UK the figures are still worrying with number of overweight and obese people in the UK putting us in eighth place for men and eleventh place for women in a global survey of forty nations.
The average female on the UK has a body weight of 11 stone that is much more than is good for them and the average male in the UK weights 12 stone 9lb. The UK is well above average when it comes to being overweight and obese.
The UK has seen a big change of diet with more and more people relying on processed foods and a much smaller emphasis on fresh fruit and vegetables that are low in fat and full of healthy nutrients. The number of fast food restaurants has also added to the obesity problem especially in town centres and in poorer areas.
The UK has also become a more sedentary nation with many people who work in offices not getting any exercise and thus becoming unfit and not burning calories. The UK government is finally beginning to take notice of the problem and has been busy setting up a task force to deal with it with a special emphasis on reducing childhood obesity that tends to continue into adulthood. They are hoping that any reduction in obesity will help lower the number of obesity related illnesses that are costing the state millions of pounds every year in NHS bills.
