Research done by a team of Italian scientists has located a specific molecule in the body which they have called “natural Viagra”. The scientists said that when they gave the naturally occurring peptide molecule to mice they gained instant erections! The molecule called urotensin II is founded in the human central nervous system and when it is administered it immediately produces a release of the compound nitric oxide which in turn makes blood vessels dilate in exactly the same way as Viagra and its cousin’s Cialis and Levitra do.

Professor Giuseppe Cirino from the pharmaceutical faculty of Naples University said that the research opened up new avenues of treatment for men suffering from erectile dysfunction. He also said that his study would soon be published fully in the respected Journal of Sexual Medicine.
Since around 90 percent of all erectile dysfunction cases are linked to a lack of blood flow in the penile artery and the fact that this urotensin II compound can remedy this in the same way that Viagra does means that this research development is a very exciting one, and one which is likely to produce effective treatments in the future.
The discovery of the important part that nitric oxide plays in the regulation of blood vessels in the human body ultimately led to the research and development which created one of the world’s best selling medications Viagra. Any research which leads to the understanding of mechanisms which produce nitric oxide in the human body will be welcomed by drug manufacturers who specialise in treatment for erectile dysfunction.
This research is still at an early stage and years of further testing will be needed to make sure that the use of urotensin II is both safe and effective in men. Until then men suffering from erectile dysfunction should speak to a doctor about getting prescriptions for the drugs Viagra, Cialis or Levitra.
