Did you know that simple hand to hand contact is known to be the reason that 80 percent of people contract the common cold and the influenza virus? The figures vary in different tests but on the whole the chances of you contracting the influenza virus are much increased if you do not wash your hands on a regular basis. If the influenza virus is going around at home or at your place of work make sure that you wash your hands at regular intervals throughout the day.

If the bird flu virus was to break out in the United Kingdom it would be especially important for citizens to be aware that they could greatly reduce the chances of contracting the deadly disease by simple hand washing practices. For example always make sure that you wash your hands carefully after you have been to the bathroom. You should always cover your nose and mouth with a clean tissue when you sneeze or cough and get rid of the tissues immediately.
If a bird flu pandemic breaks out in the United Kingdom it is likely that people will be issued with special face masks to prevent them passing germs onto people near them. It would be a good idea also to wash your hands after handling any tissues.
Be especially careful if you are preparing food and make sure that all surfaces are wiped down before you cook anything. Using a special anti-bacterial soap is also a good idea and you should wash your hands right up to your wrists with warm water for about twenty seconds. Washing your hands is not only useful for preventing the spread of the influenza virus but can also be effective in stopping many other dangerous bacteria from spreading.
One report seen by Ukmedix News says that washing your hands could be more effective than taking the Tamiflu drug in the case of a bird flu pandemic hitting the UK.
