the real damage that they experience is not physical but psychological

An Australian woman has won a lengthy legal battle for compensation after a breast reduction operation went wrong and she was left with severely disfigured breasts. Ms Bronwyn Hooper was awarded a £80,000 compensation package by Judge Frank Saccardo to be paid by the surgeon Dr Narine Efe. The breast reduction procedure which should have been simple was badly carried out and Ms Hooper’s lawyer, Ms. Alice O’Kane argued that despite it being well known that there were many options for breast reduction surgery Ms Hooper was not given the correct information.

Ms Hooper had her breasts reduced from a huge 38I with three kilos of breast tissue being removed. She underwent the procedure not only for cosmetic reasons but also because she was suffering from back and neck pain from the extra weight she was carrying. After her initial surgery she had to have three operations done by another surgeon to remove dead breast tissue from and then three more reconstruction procedures.

Judge Frank Saccardo in his summing up also noted that Dr Efe exposed Ms Hooper risks which he said could “have been avoided”. Many people who have had botched plastic surgery operations say that the real damage that they experience is not physical but psychological. Having disfigured breasts is extremely humiliating for women and can leave them with deep psychological scars. Ms Hooper noted that the distress she had suffered from the bad surgery “both physically and mentally.”

Women must realise that there can be no shortcuts and cheap options when it comes to breast augmentation surgery and that like any other operations involving anaesthetics and deep body incisions there are considerable risks involved. Women should always ask to see plastic surgery credentials and evidence of other successful breast augmentation operations. Any doctor who can’t come up with paperwork should be avoided.

I feel sorry for the women who made a wrong choice of doctor. Unfortunately a mistake sticks with you for life, for even if it is surgically righted the emotional side of it will stck with them forever
