The MHRA in the UK and the AFSSAPS in France have launched an investigation following reports that a type of silicone breast implant was tested and contains silicone gel which does not have correct authorisation to be used. The breast implant which is made by the French medical company Poly Implant Prothese is estimated to have been used by as many as 40,000 women in the UK. /p>

Mr. Nigel Mercer, the president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons said that the moment more information was available it would be released. He said that it was important that people realised that only implants from Poly Implant Prothese were under investigation and that there was no evidence whatsoever that the gel they were made from was harmful or that it could leak. The problem with these implants is that recent testing of the gel inside them shows it to be different to the gel which was initially submitted to the relevant health authorities to make it legal for sale.
Poly Implant Prothese breast implants are extremely cheap and The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons warned that the decision to choose breast implants should not be based only on price and that quality should always be the foremost consideration.
