The Mayo Clinic in America has been studying the weight loss drug Reductil on a number of overweight and obese volunteers who have different genetic make ups and have come up with the fascinating observation that the drug works differently on those with different genes. The study which was carried out to the highest clinical standards using a placebo controlled, double blind randomised format evaluated the impact of different doses (10 mg and 15 mg) of Reductil along with behavioural therapy at four week, eight week and twelve week intervals.

When the researchers examined the data but they saw that individuals who had a particular pattern of genetic variations lost more weight than those patients who did not have these specific genetic variations. For example the first group lost an average of between 10lbs. and 12lb. over the twelve week period which was considerably more than the second group.
This research is extremely important because it shows that genetic makeup can have a statistically significant effect on the effectiveness of individual medicines. Millions of dollars are being poured into weight loss research worldwide and a larger proportion of research is now being devoted to the genetic causes of obesity as scientists come round to the idea that genes could be playing a greater part in the cause of obesity than previously thought.
The issue of whether genes lead to obesity is a controversial one as many obese people like to blame their genes for their weight problems when in fact the problem is more concerned with unhealthy eating and lack of exercise. At the same time however scientists say that they have been able to pinpoint specific genes which tend to be found far more often in people with weight problems and therefore the link cannot be ignored.
The weight loss medication Reductil is the world’s best selling appetite suppressant and if doctors will be able to identify which people respond better to it they could have even better results with the medication than have already been observed. Reductil is a prescription medication and should only be used after doctor’s consultation.
