the lowdown on what hair loss remedies work and which ones do not

A review carried out by the Consumer Reports National Research Center in America has given the lowdown on what hair loss remedies work and which ones do not. The hair loss drug Propecia made by the company Merck seems to be the only product, [other than actually wearing a wig] which gets any sort of thumbs up from this respected independent consumer organization.

Consumer Reports Gives Propecia Good Review

Consumer Reports said that they interviewed 8,000 men and almost 70 percent said that it had a definite effect on dealing with their male pattern baldness and almost 30 percent said that it was “very effective” suggesting therefore that it actually regrew their hair. The organization Consumer Reports prides itself on having no commercial links with any companies and so it can give impartial and balanced advice about any product.

Other methods for dealing with hair loss which came in for positive praise were shaving your head and getting fit and healthy. Many of the men surveyed said that if they made an effort to improve their appearance by dressing well and keeping a fit and healthy physique they could make up for the lack of hair on their head.

Consumer Reports said that in the case of women, changing their diet and getting exercise was seen to be effective only in those women whose hair loss was related to stress. In the case of men this is unlikely to be effective because the majority male pattern baldness is genetic. The hair loss drug Propecia must never be used by women because it can have a detrimental effect on unborn children.

Propecia functions by preventing the build up of dihydrotestosterone in the scalp which actually weakens and kills hair follicles. Male pattern baldness which affects most men by the time they get to the age of 30 is a completely natural process but can be extremely distressing for some of them. Like most medications the sooner you take Propecia the more likely it is to be effective.
