Onion Juice Can Help Grow Hair... Really

Written by Stuart Stevens | Monday, 21 April 2008| There are 340 comments

no other treatment gave results that had an over 50% success rate.
There are a lot of rubbish hair loss remedies out there on the market and so when we received a report saying that the juice from an onion could help people want to regrow their hair we almost binned it straight away. However on further reading it appears that some clinical testing has been done with this unusual hair loss remedy and that the results were not completely without merit.

onion juice can help grow hair... really

According to Dr Sladden from the University of Tasmania while onion juice can not be conclusively proven to help people suffering from hair loss it could be worth a try especially for those people are who want to try a completely safe and natural remedy.

In the small clinical test that was done using the onion juice, people suffering from mild cases of alopecia areata and who had just a few patches of baldness were seen to experience positive results in almost 50% of cases. It appears that the onion juice works as a topical steroid which boosts the growing capacity of individual hair follicles.

Dr Sladden along with his colleagues reviewed 17 studies involving over 500 sufferers of alopecia areata and saw that no other treatment gave results that had an over 50% success rate.

It is worth noting that this treatment was not applied on men suffering from male pattern baldness but people who were suffering from the rare alopecia areata condition which is when the body's own immune system turns on hair follicles to remove them from the scalp.
Maybe scientists should be looking at the properties of the humble onion and see whether it has a useful application to help men suffering from male pattern baldness.

At present the only clinically proven treatments to help man suffering from male pattern baldness are Propecia and minoxidil.

I avidly suggested onion remedy many years ago on a forum because I got results. When I did a search years ago, there was absolutely nothing that came up about this. I sometimes wonder if my post on that forum years ago started all the interest.

This works! There are millions of things in nature that work much better than man-made medicine. My wife had hyperemesis when she was pregnant (throwing up ALL the time) and we were saved and did not have to be hospitalised because of Ginger. And YES the onion treatment works for many people.

:Shay. I guess that if your hair is weakened in any way onion could help you make them longer. Try a juicer, add some oil(Olive oil, Castor oil or Aloe vera) and some Vodka(some people use Apple cider) to take away the smell and apply to roots. Then massage gently. Probably leaving it on for longer time is beneficial. Some sleep on it and shampoo in the morning. You can also find an SLS free shampoo.

Hey friends!!

Last year I have lost almost 25% of my hair. and I was mentally depressed all the time. My Elder sister came to me and suggested me to use Onion juice to prevent hair falling and grow new hair. But, I used to have longer hair and to put the onion juice on my hair's root, I had to wet all my hair through onion juice. that was something I hate. Then few days back I I just cut off my hair from its root ( Become Bald ) to use onion juice with its best effect. now i can easily use them on my head and it makes my head cool. basically my head remains hot 24/7.

I also use Castor oil in the night by mixing it up with coco oil before going to sleep. Now a days I am observing my hair and hopping my hair will regrow from the points i lost them.

( I am using them because, I found sister got good results with onion juice She naturally had less hair than me, but now without a doubt she has more hair than me )

Hi Tania. There is no such system or method of using them. But Use Onion juice in every 2 days is good.

And Use Castor Oil Once in every three days. Just before going to sleep.

Use Castor oil with Coconut'oil. Only 2-3 drop of Castor Oil mix with 20-25drop Coconut'oil and massage them on your scalp.

It will help you to have fresh sleep and will help to grow new hair from those gap in your scalp..

Cheers.

Hi.. Betta. You are Most Welcome.

As I am talking from my own Experience, I can assure you that, This will help.

And Yes Friends.. Don't Forget to Drink a lot of waters.

Keep your Body Cool, and Blood -circulation Normal. Otherwise, You head will become hotter which is biggest cause of losing hair.

Use Herbal Shampoo and avoid Chemical shampoo.

And Avoid Oily or Fat Food @ night. Because, You need rest in Nights which makes you cool after having a long busy hectic day. But if you have Oily or Fat Food in nights, it will keep your body warm while you're sleeping and you will not be as cool & fresh you need to be to start next day's busy hectic schedule.

And If you are a chain smoker, leave it now. It also increases internal body temperature.

Hope my little info will help some of you guys.

Hey Vijai,,, You don't need to add anything with Onion Juice to be honest. Just use them on the blank parts of your head and the wait for around 1hr-1.5hr and then go for a shower. and clean your hair properly with water. Don't be rude with your hair while washing them. After washing them properly, such some Herbal Shampoo. this will stop your hair fall within 2 weeks. and If you can continue for three four months straight away, You will see new hair are growing up from blank parts of your scalps.

You can also use Castor Oil by mixing it with Coco Oil just before you go to sleep.

twice a week. this will also help you to grow new hair on your head faster.

Hope you got my Answer. :)

Hi Vijai. You don't Need to use Honey..

Its Better You use Castor Oil With Coco Oil Mixed in 4 : 25 Drop. 25 Drop Coco And 4 Drop Castor oil.

Use them Just before going to sleep.

Its also helpful to make your Hair Root Strong and also helps to grow new Hair from the bald parts of your head's scalps..

And Onion must be continued 3-4days a week.

Nah bro.. It will not be able to give you 100% of your hair back.

But yes, If you have the passion to keep using this treatment like, 2-3days/week for next 1-2yrs. it will almost get you 60-70% of your hair back.. thats the most this method can bring you back.. Because, If you lose a teeth once, you get back 2nd time, but you lose it twice no chance after then. similarly, when you are getting new hair from those places from where you lost it, and you will also lose those new hair after some time..

So, because of this cycling, you will never be able to get back to your 100%.. But proper treatment and patients can bring you great results and can sustain with you for longer period of time. :)

Cheers.

Guy123, you are probably right about masturbation. Too much porn? ;^) Guess too much of it causes DHT levels to go up and cause baldness (you can google about DHT levels and hair loss). Also, I've seen under eye wrinkles but not sure of the root cause.

Today I consulted dermatologist, began doing bit of research on the medicines he prescribed (he didn't talk of the above cause as a possibility), and just stopped by this blog :) I love the discussions here. My doc prescribed: trevicot and tugain lotion (for my receding hairline, hair thinning/loss and graying), yogard (for eye wrinkles). Someone said regimen of vitamins (Trevicot) can prevent DHT effects. I don't want to try tugain, seems risky, but I'm trying vitamins and onion juice. Someone said, if you get into muscle building, it lets out excessive DHT. There are shampoos that block DHT production too it seems.

That is amazing way to stop hair loss!

I tried it and it took only three times to know it works. It really stops hair from falling or tangling up in my brush after blow dry.

I used red onion and grated it and the juice ran down easily. I have also used an onion rubbing on my scalp directly, it worked very well too. I left the juice on my hair for 4 hours.

lots of small hair...
then i stopped doing so..out of laziness (mistake)..i will start doing it tonight again
however i just wanted to share with you my success story
another thing regarding the smell...
if you want to wash the smell out

i ve been researching this ..& there is a lot of science that backs it up..+ my own & others personal experience..

one thing i noticed use the fresh red onions they have more sulfur content (stronger taste and smell)

never used cooked/steamed onions ..they have no Sulfar content in them ..you can tell from the lack of smell...

all the best to come for you and everyone using this remedy

Here are my secret tips (after many hours of research): 1. SHAMPOO - "Nizoral" - while using Nizoral is not chemical free, it does stop shedding for men because it has the active ingrediant "Ketoconazole". This shampoo is for men. For women, the best one would be a "tea tree oil" which is also more natural. These shampos will not regrow hair, but it stops the loss. Wash hair once to remove old residue, then apply a second time and let it soak.
2. VITAMINS - to help grow stronger, thicker existing strands it is best to use a "hair vitamin" there are a few that seem to be getting high reviews on amazon dot com. For men only vitamin would be 'hairomega" because it has ingredites that stop hair loss in men and promote stonger hair. For women, I believe the one getting the most reviews is nioxin. Also make sure to add a seperate bottle of biotin, which everyone says helps with hair, skin, eyes, and nails. Biotin also helps speed up the growth of hair, incase your hair is growing really slow.
3. Onions/Garlic??? - I have no idea if this works, to actually regrow hair, however my brother was in the military going through a really stressful time and lost a nickel sized patch of hair on the side of his head and also was losing hair around his chin/beard area. He started applying garlic, but I'm not sure if the regrowth was due to the garlic or that he was no longer in the stressful area. I've yet to ask him, and have not tested it myself. However it seems harmless, and very worth it.
4. COLD - I live in Arizona where it seems many men are bald as opposed to colder climates. This is more of an observation, but I've noticed no sheding during the winter, and increased shedding during extremely hot weather. Also, I noticed that the colder the weather is the thicker my hair seemed to become.

It would be nice if these posts kept a running total of what is actually working, instead of reading through hundreds of posts. Just an idea.

Ok now that i've shared my "secrets" please share yours :)

I Hope this helps many people, God bless you, and I feel your pain, I hope we all can figure this out and later feel happy with a full head of healthy hair, without having to pay for nonsense ebooks, or expensive dermatologists.

most young men do excessive masturbation which causes hairloss if the follices have adrogen-receptors (genetics) that can be affected by DHT and inflammation..

do your research on that and on the sideeffects of masturbation...

also do not eat animal fats, no sour foods, no sugar, no refined foods, no alcohol, drink lots of water, massage the scalp daily, try DHT-Blockers, try Emu-Oil, do exercising, live as healthy as possible...eat fruits and vegetables...

and do more research on the web...
don´t give up...

Yes, I would adivse for onion juice only and you can drink two table spoons of olive oil. Onions have sulfur and quercetin in them, especially red onions. These two ingredients have been experimentally tested in hair follicle regeneration and prevention of alopecia. From my point of view, alopecia in women could be treated faster as compared to men which have higher levels of DHT in their blood as compared to women. I read some posts where onion juice resulted in hair thickness and new hairs growing back. But this needs patience and persistence alongwith being optimistic that this will work. Sulfur helps in the transport of oxyegn across cells making them permeable for nutrient uptake. Hope you will adopt this treatment and get good results. But it will take 6-7 months to see hair thickness.

Onion contains a compound known as nitric oxide, which is a vasodialator (dialates blood vessels) and thus increases blood supply into that blood vessels. Onion might have action through this NO (plus other nutritional elements), increasing blood supply to hair follicles, just like minoxidil (tugain).
As the hair cycle duration is of 3 mnths, u must be able to start noticing results after that much time. If it is applied, ideally it should be applied twice daily.
Paste or juice doesn't matter.
Because of this NO, onion is called poor man's viagra. Side effects must be obvious now.

1. Need to drink lots of water avoid all kinds of beverage drinks. Reduce smoking and masturbating.

2. Use Onion Juice and massage your scalp very softly twice a week. User soap seeds to wash your hair to remove the Onion smell. Strictly no chemical shampoos. You can also add fenugreek paste to condition your hair simultaneously. This is very important for hair growth.

3. Use coconut milk and massage your scalp twice a week.

4. Before sleeping massage your head with Castor Oil or Olive Oil both have are advisable.

Ive tried every snake oil out there to no avail and many other concoctions that just came up short.doing the onion thing now and it seems to be working great, best results so far out of everything ive tried.I just slice the onion about a quarter of an inch break it apart put it on my scalp and push down forcing the juice into the follicles. let it dry a little bit then apply a few squirts of emu oil messaging it into the scalp as this will carry the onion juice deeper into the scalp.within a few weeks take a small spray bottle fill it half way with organic apple cider vinegar and the rest with water and shake well spray lightly on scalp and yull see the little hairs alot better also the the spray breaks down the sebum that has become lodged in the follicle as well as the scalp, thats the shiny stuff you see on a bald guys head,.anyways hope this helps!

I have been under a lot of stress since having my baby. I have no support system I expected and as a result, I neglected myself completely. Baby is excellent but I am falling apart. I lost all my beautiful thick hair due to stress, poor diet, dehydration and sleep deprivation. I recently learned about onion juice and started using it 2 weeks ago, along with eating more and drinking more water. It works!!! My hair stopped breaking. I can comb it and see little if anything in my comb or sink. I apply OJ to my hair every other night (wrap it up good) and wash it out in the morning followed by an intense moisturizing conditioner. I leave it on for and hour or so under a plastic cap as I do my chores. My conditioner also kills the onion smell. After rinsing the conditioner I massagee castor oil into my hair and scalp and put it in a ponytail. My hair has fallen out too much to style yet. I expect to have a full head of hair in 3 months using this method. I love this onion juice potion. It works. My hair is so much stronger. Onions. Who would have thought? I do hate the smell but its worth it to have my hair back.

Hi guys, let me tell you how you can make onion juice/paste, what I mostly do, put half skinless pre-chopped onion and add about one ounce of water in the blender, blend them until onion become paste(you can add more water if needed). Apply the paste on you scalp, massage slowly for few minutes and leave it for minimum 2hrs. If you want to make paste more strong then add one clove skinless garlic, 1 ounce Apple cider vinegar and same amount of water, blend everything to make paste, apply the paste as I instructed earlier. Store the rest paste in the glass container and leave it in the fridge, please try to finish paste within a 5 to 6 days otherwise paste will become weak in the strength. Good luck.

Hi,

For good result apply the Onion juice/paste daily at least 2-3 weeks then alternative days.

Best if you massage and leave it over night, else 1-1/2 to 2hrs would work perfect for hair growth.

You will start seeing the good result in around 3-7 months.

For those who dont like the onion smell can add 4-5 drops of rosemary essential oil, but I recommend you to dont mix any oil as onion might lose its strength to increase the blood circulation on scalp. Massaging Onion Juice/Paste is used to boost the blood circulation in the scalp and guarantee the growth of healthy and thick hair.

For more details about how to make onion juice/paste please read my earlier post.

Oils are also very important for your scalp, please massage just one or mixture of oils on your scalp at least 3 times a week to feed them enough vitamins and prevent them from any damage.

Thanks and good luck

Onion juice/paste is good when its fresh, leaving onion juice/paste on scalp for longer period isnt very effective as applying fresh on your scalp. You can try any mild shampoo to wash your hair otherwise thats fine if you really want to wash your hair with plain water to avoid shampoo but make sure when you wash your hair try to remove all onion particles as when they dry they can stick on your scalp, try to massage few drops of any of your favourite oil on your scalp to let your scalp moisturize and clean.

I recommend you to apply onion on your entire scalp as the main reason to applying onion on your scalp to boost blood circulation on your scalp

For more details please read my previous post.

Thanks and good luck

If you have any stress problem please consult with you doctor first.

Onions have excellent healing qualities. They are good antibacterial agents and can be used for cleansing, nourishing and improving blood circulation. Onions contain a quantity of important nutrients like calcium, magnesium, potassium and vitamins C and B6. It is also high in sulfur, which is useful in promoting the regrowth of healthy hair. A high sulfur level in collagen tissue is believed to help in preventing hair loss and hair thinning problems.

researchers found that onion juice when applied topically can cause hair regrowth in 86.9 percent of patients with patchy hair loss. Whether you suffer from pattern baldness or merely from a thinning hair condition, you can promote healthy hair growth and possibly even regrowth.

I have been applying onion juice on my scalp for my pattern baldness from last week, since now I havent notice any improvement but I am quite positive. BTW Im male...

Please Note: I am not a licensed doctor, dermatologist or trichologist. All Im attempting to do here is to provide information on possible natural remedies for hair loss, based on my research.

Thanks and good luck

Though I have got very small hair on my bald area, but its not visible from far....I hope applying onion juice daily for 30 mins. will improve the condition.

However, this treatment unfortunately implies a deterioration of vision, decreased libido, promote weight gain and development of down on the face and body.

Hi everyone...I have tried onion juice...it worked to some extent...i applied it everyday for a month, left it for 25-30 mins then washed it....shampooed thrice a week...

smell was controlled to some extent with castor oil.

Ingredients:
1. small Onion
2. small slice of ginger
3. few drops of honey
4. few drops of castor oil
5. a string or 2 of garlic

take all these in a mixture and grind it and filter it.
apply the liquid and leave it for half hr and wash off with water.

also mild message will help.

Result: very minute hairs grew after 18-20 days of regular use. I am gonna restart the use and continue this for a long time now.

Disadvantage : quite messy and a very pungent smell. Hair go dry and give a dusty look.

Hey Guys, my name is Mike. I am a 31 year old male experiencing the symptoms of androgenetic alopecia (male pattern) on my frontal head area. I have been using medium to big red onions 6 out of 7 nights for the 28 last days. After I cut it I rub the onion on my scalp for 20 minutes and then leave it overnight then I wash it away the next morning. Although I have noticed my hair are shinnier and stronger, I still dont see new hair growing on these areas. I am thinking of stoping it and turning to meditation. Wish everyone finds a solution eventually. PS. No pro with the smell, kinda like it too.

Please dilute it as much as possible before using. As we have to very much careful in using this type of natural products which is very strong in nature.

Just wanted to pitch in my 2 cents on how I apply onion on my scalp.

1) I peel off the outer dry skin of about 10 - 15 small red onions.
2) I put them in a mixer/blender and grind them (I dont apply water or anything). While grinding, I dont let the grinder on at high speed. Rather, I use short bursts (~2 seconds each) at the lowest speed. I do this until the onions are chopped into tiny pieces (usually takes about 4-5 short bursts to chop them to this level).
3) I take a cup shaped mesh filter with a handle, and put all these chopped onions into this filter.
4) I put a small cup under the filter, and use a spoon to press the onion pieces into the filter. The juice then gets filtered into the cup below.
5) Then I take some cotton, and dip it into this juice. I then press this cotton into my scalp (I have cut my hair very short for this sake). I press it all over my scalp. I dont rub it.. cos vigorous rubbing might damage the hair. So I gently but firmly press this cotton into my scalp. Generally, the hand will start paining due to these presses.
6) In this entire process, less than 2-3 hairs fall off.

I have started this only 2 weeks back, and I have been applying it every night. Planning to do so consistently for the next 1 year or so. So far, I have not noticed growth of new hairs as such. But then, 2 weeks is too short a time to notice results. Im mentally prepared to be consistent in applying, and not focus my attention towards the results right now. I would like to refer a quote here, "To get the result that less than 1% of the population gets, you must be willing to put in the effort that less than 1% of the population puts"!

I read a few posts where people have mentioned that they applied it, and in about 2 weeks, they noticed visible improvements, and that their friends too have mentioned that they have noticed improvements. With no disrespect, I would like to request you to not fool yourself. I think results will come only after atleast 3 months or so!

This post was mainly intended to share my procedure of extracting and applying the onion juice; hope it helped!
