Marvelon tablets are hormonal contraceptive containing desogestrel and ethinylestradiol as the two unique active ingredients. They’re the synthetic forms of two female sex hormones known as progesterone (desogestrel) and oestrogen (ethinylestradiol).

Marvelon is usually used for contraceptive purposes. Intake of the pill mostly allows the woman to have a regular, less painful and lighter menstrual bleeding. As a result it has been prescribed for those women who showed irregular, painful and heavy periods as well.

As a combined oral contraceptive, Marvelon make ineffective the typical menstrual cycle. The sex hormones levels usually change during menstruation and across the entire month. Through the action of the hormones, an egg is released by the ovaries in what’s known as ovulation. This prepares the womb lining for a potential pregnancy.

Once the cycle is up and the egg is yet to be fertilised, the hormones level dips and the womb lining is shed in what is known as the monthly period.

As the daily dose of Marvelon pills is taken, the pill works effectively by tricking the body into believing ovulation has taken place already. As a result, an egg is not released and doesn’t ripen on a monthly basis.

It’s also worth noting the hormones are also involved in increasing the womb’s neck natural mucus thickness. This has the effect of making it impossible for sperms to enter the vagina and cross into a womb to fertilise the egg. Hormones are also effective in changing the endometrium (womb lining) quality ensuring that no fertilised egg is implanted there.

As a monophasic pill, every table has the same amount of hormones. Each tablet is swallowed daily for 21 days before taking a break of seven days. After the break of seven days without taking any pill, the hormones level in blood dips, resulting in a bleeding resembling a normal period, known as withdrawal bleeding. You can then start the next packet of 21 pills after the pill-free seven days, whether you’re bleeding or not.

Marvelon tablets should be taken for the first time starting on the first day of the menstruation cycle. Taking the pills this way protects the woman from a pregnancy right away and no other extra contraception method will be required.

You can also take the pills up to five days of your menstruation cycle without the need of another contraceptive. For those with short menstruation cycles of below 23 days, talk to UKMedix medical professionals to know if another contraceptive method is a good idea.
