Clinical testing for a drug called flibanserin is continuing all over the United States for what promises to be a drug to treat female sexual dysfunction which could rival the medication Intrinsa. The new flibanserin drug is specifically designed to help females who suffer from hypoactive sexual desire disorder or in plain English, a lack of libido.

According to one professor at the Nova Southeastern University, flibanserin is only two years away from being launched on the market. Professor Ken Johnson has been involved in the clinical testing and is on record saying that women are responding to the treatment positively.
The flibanserin drug works by binding prefrontal cortex receptors that are responsible for controlling sexual arousal and desire. The idea is that the flibanserin drug will have an effect on stimulating sexual desire in the brain meaning that it works in a completely different way to erectile dysfunction drugs that men use.
The market for drugs to treat female sexual dysfunction is potentially much greater than the market for Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. The market for erectile dysfunction drugs is estimated to be worth around $3.5 billion dollars and therefore research analysts say that with more women suffering from sexual dysfunction than men the drug market for female sexual dysfunction could therefore be worth well over $4billion yearly.
The female sexual dysfunction drug Intrinsa has had positive result with many women but it is not effective for all women. The drug Intrinsa works by replacing testosterone in the system which women need in order to have good sexual function. Testosterone is normally associated as being a male hormone however women also need this hormone in little amounts in order to feel well and enjoy sex.
