At Ukmedix News We've written loads of articles about the dangers of extensive bicycle use and its link to higher rates of erectile dysfunction in men. A new study done by the Department of Urology at the Institute of Men's Health of the Hamburg-Eppendorf University Medical Centre has reviewed all the studies done in this regard and has confirmed the significant connection between between perineal compression from cycling which can lead to vascular, endothelial and neurogenic complications in men and the eventual development of sexual impotence.

The other thing that the researchers examined was whether there was a link between female sexual dysfunction and extensive bicycle use. They said that the research in this area was pretty limited but there was nevertheless clear evidence that women should be aware that too much cycling on uncomfortable bike seats could also lead them to have sexual problems. They spoke about how women should also make use of special bicycles seats which take the pressure off the perineum and transfer weight on to the buttocks. The researchers said that more clinical evidence was needed to highlight the link between female sexual dysfunction and poor bicycle seat design.
Most people know that for a man to become aroused sexually good blood flow is needed in the penile artery which goes through the perineum and ultimately causes an erection, but not everybody is aware that for good female sexual function good blood flow is also a prerequisite.
Women who go to the gym on a regular basis and use cycling machines should also take care to make sure that there is not too much pressure on the perineum and that the bike seats are comfortable. Obviously using an uncomfortable bike seat once or twice is unlikely to do you much harm but continued use on a regular basis could cause problems.
One way of making uncomfortable and poorly designed seats more comfortable is to wrap your towel around them however this is a temporary solution and ideally you should use one of the specially designed seats that have been manufactured purely to take pressure off the perineum.
