Suggestive Names Sell Medicines

Is it all in the name? Deciding on what to call medications or any other product can have a big impact on whether they are successful in the marketplace. These days before a large company launches any product it will go to specialist companies which made a point to study the art and the science of getting the right name for the right product.

The three famous erectile dysfunction medications Viagra, Cialis and Levitra all have names which have been carefully chosen after months of study and the use of testing on various groups of people. Not only is it necessary to get a good name for the drug but the name also had to pass the censors at the Food and Drug Administration in America which frown on drug names which are too obviously suggestive. For example the FDA would not approve the name Reductil for the famous weight loss medication in America because it sounds too like “Reduce” and therefore it is known as Meridia in the States.
Viagra obviously sounds a little bit like Vigour and Virility and also a little bit like Niagara the famous waterfall and thus the name has a certain aura of strength to it which subconsciously suggests that it could help men suffering from erectile dysfunction.
The second most popular erectile dysfunction medication is Cialis which was named after considering the French word Ciel which means Sky. This conjures up an image of an open blue sky thus suggesting wide open spaces, freedom and lack of restriction. Incidentally in France Cialis is the most popular erectile dysfunction medication beating Viagra to the top spot; could this all be down to the name?
The erectile dysfunction drug Levitra made by the pharmaceutical company Bayer also has a suggestive name. Levitra sounds like Levitate or Lever and the ‘vitra’ part of the name suggests life and vitality.
