Fifty men recently volunteered to take part in an exciting new study which could lead to an alternative for the erectile dysfunction drugs Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. The study named ZEN was initiated by Medtronic Inc and involves the use of minuscule stents design to keep arteries propped open.
Since almost 90 percent of all erectile dysfunction in men is a blood flow problem through the penile artery this novel idea of physically inserting a stent into the offending artery in principle makes complete sense. This treatment if it can be proved to be effective will be especially beneficial for men who are unable to use Viagra Cialis or Levitra due to side effects or because they are using other medications which are contraindicated with them.
Stents are not new to medical science and have already been used in arteries that supply blood to the heart. Doctor Jason Rogers from the University of California at Davis Medical Center in Sacramento explained that men who successfully had a stent implanted would be able to have spontaneous sexual intercourse rather than popping a tablet or having to make use of other or awkward method such as vacuum pumps or injections.
The minuscule mesh stents are lined with drugs and carefully inserted into arteries that are responsible for blood flow to the penis. It is hoped that these stents will soon result in the volunteers being able to sustain normal and spontaneous erections. The study results which will be collected over the next couple of years should be available for scientific scrutiny sometime in 2011 and the stents themselves are unlikely to be available to the general public for a few years after that, so don’t hold your breath.
Unhealthy living is the largest cause of erectile dysfunction in men because it clogs up arteries. To improve your erectile function you should eat healthily, get exercise, quit smoking and drink in moderation as all of these things will keep your penile arteries in good shape.
