There are two main reasons why people find it hard to believe that smoking causes erectile dysfunction. Firstly the idea that inhaling smoke has any impact on the ability to produce an erection seems a bit far fetched at face value and it is only after knowing about the artery blocking properties of cigarette smoke that a connection can be made between the two. Secondly, smokers live in denial and therefore no matter how much you preach to them about the dangers of cigarettes they refuse to listen just because they don't want to know the truth and because they can't deal with their addiction.

In fact cigarette smoke is more than just a penile artery blocking problem because in fact it has a negative effect on erectile function in a number of ways. For example cigarette smoking increases your blood pressure, and hypertension in itself is a well known cause of erectile dysfunction. Hypertension puts a strain on the heart and this mean that it has less strength to pump the blood through the penile artery in order to achieve an erection.
Not only does your heart have to work harder because of high blood pressure but also because when you inhale cigarette smoke it contains carbon monoxide which prevents various organs and parts of the body from getting oxygen. This again means that your heart has to work faster in order to maintain and sustain an erection, which will probably lead to significantly reduced sexual prowess.
Smoking in fact impedes the flow of blood to the penis in two different ways. Firstly it causes deposits of fat to build up in your blood vessels which restricts their ability to function properly and also it hardens the arteries (referred to as arteriosclerosis in medical circles) which can lead to heart disease. When your arteries become hard they lose their ability to function properly and this in turn can cause erectile dysfunction.
Put simply, smoking is a multi pronged attack on your ability to have sex and to get an erection. Every time you light up a cigarette you get one step closer to having to live with a limp and useless penis.
If you are a smoker the only time to give up is right now, don't wait until you have to ply yourself with ever increasing doses of Viagra, Cialis or Levitra in order to get an erection.
