A very unconventional way to treat erectile dysfunction has been developed by a team of scientists who say that their invention could revolutionise the way impotence is dealt with. The treatment which uses a new form of shock wave therapy may be able to help men who do not respond to the erectile dysfunction drugs Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.

The research which was done at the Rambam Healthcare Campus in Israel was done carrying out externally applied shock wave therapy on 29 men who were suffering from severe erectile dysfunction. All of the volunteers were over 60 and had twelve sessions of shock treatments over a nine week period.

One month after the shockwave treatment had finished the volunteers were given erectile dysfunction medications and asked to fill in questionnaires which showed 75 percent of them had significant improvements.  Almost 30 percent of the men reported normal erectile function with the use of an erectile dysfunction drug and blood flow to the penile artery was significantly better in all of the men. Two months after the end of the shockwave therapy 30 percent of the men claimed that they were able to get normal erections without the use of impotence medication.

This research should be treated with cautious optimism because it does seem that the use of the shock waves could have reawakened previously dormant blood vessels which were not responding to Viagra, Cialis and Levitra. At the same time it should also be borne in mind that there is a considerable placebo effect with any erectile dysfunction treatment and this may have played a part in the improvement in the reported erectile function. Nevertheless, many of the men claimed that the shockwave treatment enabled them to achieve full on vaginal penetration which they previously had been unable to do!

The study which was published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine could lead to further research and ultimately a commercial application of a shock wave zapper for use in the bedroom!!
